LITTLE TRAIN

LITTLE TRAIN

Right under the subway bridge you will find Little Train. Here they cook food highly influenced by the Japanese way of cooking with coal, Robata and Hibachi. They mix drinks behind the busy bar desk and beyond all the sizzling and chitchat, you can hear the trains rumbling by above.

BRIEF: Create an identity for the imaginary restaurant Little Train. It’s up to you to decide what this restaurant is all about. Find a visual language that responds to the spirit of the food, the interior, the location etc. Make it a unique and exciting experience to visit Little Train.

SOLUTION: I made Little Train a Japanese restaurant with a heavy influence from coal. The classic image of an old locomotive is what popped up in my head when hearing the name of the restaurant. Secondly, I thought of all the heat and dirt from tossing coal into the engine. I find the resemblance between the locomotive and kitchen interesting. The heart of the restaurant, or train. Except in this case there are chefs, instead of train workers, sweating from the hot coal beneath the food.

The coal spreads from the menu and identity and clings to the walls and make the identity visible among the interior as well. Always keeping the contrast between a messy kitchen and an elegant restaurant.

For all the Robatayaki and Hibachi enthusiasts Little Train releases a cookbook filled with recipes, stories from the chefs and some history behind the restaurant.

This project started out as a team work in the beginning of my education. Towards the end of the programme, I dusted it off and made it my own.
